A top Tibetan monk is to be prosecuted for money-laundering in India

A top Tibetan monk who is seen as a potential successor to the Dalai Lama is to be prosecuted for money-laundering after an Indian court overturned a decision to drop charges, police said Thursday.

At a hearing on Wednesday at the Himachal Pradesh High Court, a judge issued an order for authorities to open criminal proceedings against Karmapa Urgyen Trinley over the recovery of around $1 million in foreign currency during a raid on his Buddhist monastery four years ago.

Although criminal conspiracy charges were filed in the aftermath of the raid, a district court had dismissed the case in 2012 in a verdict that was later appealed and the subject of Wednesday’s hearing.

“The impugned order of May 21, 2012, passed by the judicial magistrate of Una is quashed and dismissed,” Judge Sureshwar Thakur said in his judgement, a copy which has been obtained by AFP.
Local police chief Anupam Sharma confirmed that the first step in bringing a prosecution had begun.

“We have already filed a chargesheet in the court against him,” Sharma told AFP, meaning that police have filed an outline of the evidence against the accused with the court.

The case dates back to a raid in January 2011 on a monastery in the Himalayan town of Dharamshala in which investigators say stacks of bank notes from 26 different currencies were recovered, including more than $100,000 worth of Chinese yuan.

The raid came after two people were pulled over by police in a car containing large amounts of cash. During interrogations, the pair said the money was meant for a land deal involving a trust headed by Trinley.

The 30-year-old Trinley has denied any wrongdoing, saying the bank notes found in the monastery were donations from devotees which had accumulated over the years and that he had no involvement in the land deal.

The monk is revered by followers as the 17th incarnation of the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

He fled Tibet at the turn of the century at the age of 14, reaching India after an eight-day journey by foot and horseback over the Himalayas.

Since fleeing, he has mainly lived at the Gyuto Monastery in Dharamshala, the northern Indian hill station that is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile.

Trinley is recognised by both China and the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the Karmapa Lama, head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s four major schools.

He is seen as as having the highest profile of a cast of young lamas who could succeed the Dalai Lama who has just turned 80.

His appearances with the Dalai Lama have fuelled speculation he is being groomed as the Nobel peace laureate’s spiritual successor.

His spokesman Kunzang Chungyalpa said Trinley has great faith in India’s judicial system.
“He strongly believes truth will prevail at the end,” he told AFP.

Hi friend, pl. see Madam Wango’s work (3rd from the left in given snap) who is organising International Tipitak Chanting every year in India with the help of International Buddhist Countries as well as States and National administration of India. In Oct. 2014 I have attended the above mentioned event. at Buddhagaya. What i mean to say is that , people do not bother about the (bad & good situation or people) if they are committed. With the like minded people, they keep on working and bring the change.

Many poors live around fancy monastery complex

This was contributed by my good friend from Indonesia.

As a layman I did cry when I saw and witnessed myself when I visited the fancies monasteries complex inside Lumbini park, it’s like UN monasteries racing for architectures beauty as majority are empty with only some young monks work as house keeper or maintenance while there are so many poors work as ricksaw driver with very little income to take tourist rounding the monasteries complex…a Geshe’la who accompanied me also cried as too contrast and said if he could do something he would turn all the buildings as orphanage, hospital or nursing house for old people that do not have family. Very ironic…the donators are like planting apple seed in a desert which never grow a fruit…

All are greedy for merits of making offerings to collect merits and overlook compassion. They have not realized Bodhicitta …(compassion with wisdom) also monks as houusekeepers or those who are poor who worked as rickshaw drivers are all their karma…they didnt have the karma and merits to become a monk as housekeeper in the monastry…

When I was attended a monlam of HH Karmapa 3 years ago in Bodhgaya, a nun was killed for couple hundred rupees because the robber stabbed her with knife when she was trying to secure her money. Why this happened ? If we take a tour around Bodhgaya, the most luxury buildings are hotels and buddhist temples/monasteries from different yanas, while the local people expecially low caste are extremely poor. And Bihar province where Bodhgaya located is no.2 poorest province in India. I even saw kids/student study just sitting and writting on the floor and it’s a formal school and they are considered as a lucky one as still can study as majority poor people are illiterate. No wonder they rob and kill eventhough it’s criminal. Hunger over morality and logic mind while Buddhist community show wealth there and they thought monks/nuns are rich as live in good, luxury and big monasteries….I always love to see if any senior and powerfull high monks will see and make a correction…

Someone is listening this . She/He may initiate for small scale(need based industry (training locals for works) and building hospitals, day and night care shelters and homes for elders. However, they have to work patiently in that not governed efficiently administration.(Maharashtra, India is one of the state that has good govt.functioning). One has to work like Ven. Punya Bhante worked during The Buddha’s time(Pl.remember how The Buddha said to Bhante Punya . ” That particular area where you desired to work is habitated by bad people. They may cut your physical part one by one… and the story goes like that”.The Bhate said so what the Lord, ” if they kill me,i will be free from the sufferings immediately”.Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu Punya, said the Buddha.Later Ven. Monk changed the lives of bad people into the best. We know this through the Buddhist texts.

Hence the future is in our hands to create gd karma and merits to be reborn as a human with 5 senses intact a life of happiness and leasure a country where there is Dharma.

Welcome to todays’world with its strange logic… Very sad, indeed.Spiritual values get lost when there is too much luxury.

Loving kindness with wisdom

Message From Reader :
Master- What is loving kindness – is it loving a person no matte what? Is appreciating a person’s traits a bad thing?

Master Chow’s Reply :

3R of temple – Reduce, Re-re-use & Re-cycle

Message From Reader :
Yes. Building temples usually not pro-environment. Moreover there are many redundant temples around should be reduced re-re-used & re-cycled (just my opinion 😁)

Master Chow’s Reply :
Those money that used for building temples can save many children from dying of hunger in the rural areas. I still can not understand the mind of the high monks and the rich ones who can donate so much money for such a narrow objective. I am sure the Buddha will cry seeing such things happening on earth. The fruit of such karma ripening will be very bitter.

Comments :
I think some people still think that building temple is good for accumulating good merits. It is not wrong but it could have been put to better use like providing food to the poor and building homes for those poor soul that is in need.

Positivity attracts good luck – avoid negative friend

Positivity attracts good luck and helpful friends to you. The helpful friends will provide good opportunities for you. You feel much happier and peaceful moving along with such friends.

Avoid negative friends for they suck up your luck and you end up miserable with painful feeling of loss.

Comments :
But Master, when we are helping friend they are usually very down & negative…how to handle with wisdom?

Ain’t I an example?

Master Chow, you are an example(one and only also) that we can’t emulate! We don’t have your level of wisdom and skill. How?

Your kindness and generosity are good enough.

Thank you

Chow Cheong King’s thought is a truth which helps us to progress.

Monks with huge followers should spread the teaching of Buddha to more laymen

Thank you for sharing Sir !
I agreed with what Sis Y said.

Monks that have huge followers should spread the teaching of the Buddha to more laymen. Building More luxurious temples will make them lost their objectives.

Followers who go after the famous monks to get riches and power are getting a very wrong idea about Buddhism. This is not what Buddhism is all about !

Comments :
Some monks are blinded bro….

I fully agree. Those money used for building temples can feed many hungry children in the rural countries.

I really cannot comment monks hold over 200vows and wears the robe. I m a layman. Building big temples with BIG statues to bless the area and all brings who sees the statues.. when the followers are rich they contribute it back to the temples so they do virtuous deeds… rather then non virtuous deeds.. thank you..__/|\__ sorry i dont to collect negative karma fr speech.

You can keep your own view. There is no problem. The truth is always there.

I m a layman holding only refuge vows what we see is only superficial what other deeds they do we do not know please dont hold wrong views of monks if they do anything bad only they are answerable to their karma… you wont know what they really for unless you are the monk yoursrelf. Please do not hold wrong view.. watch our mind and our mouth cause they are the cause us to collect negative karma. Sorry if i offend anyone here.. _/|\_

I fully agree with you.
This passage was written by a fb friend. I just put up his comment.

Use this special tool known as “observation” to understand true dharma

Observation is an important tool to look inward and outward into the mundane and spiritual world.

Looking inward helps you to see your faults, karmic behaviour, habits and all defilements. There is good chance for you to change your characteristics and make an angel out of you.

Looking outward you see and hear the cries of painful unfortunate beings and also those unseen beings. You realise what causes them to suffer. Knowing the cause and effect of all these suffering beings, you won’t want to follow their footsteps to suffer more in future or on the next rebirth.

The real understanding of the truth dharma is to use this special tool known as observation.

Comments :
Master Chow, is Observation = mindfulness + awareness ?

Yes

Send excess food ingredient to needy, rather than destroy it

Everyone has gone through suffering and pains one way or other. But fortunately we have three moments of happiness in a day when we have our breakfast, lunch and dinner. Once our stomach is filled up with a right amount of food, we feel satisfied with joy.

But looking further into the world whether it is a developed or developing or undeveloped country, we still find people dying of hunger. The distribution of food in this world is uneven and some countries burnt away their cereals and other agricultural or proceed food in order to maintain the prices of them so as to make enough of profits for themselves. If these extra foods can be sent to feed the poor and needy, this will be an ideal way of sharing love and happiness to our world population. There will be less people dying of hunger.

Comments :
How true. We’re running out of food very fast through our ignorance…we need to wake up very very soon ⏰⏰⏰

Well said with right thought

the countries which burn their crops be guided by ethics and responsibility for welfare of the Human beings.

A correct analogy !
The major problem is the farming businessmen and association do not think that way. Another problem is transporting a large amount of cereal or grains incur large amount of transport cost. There must be willing parties to pay for the transport cost, the companies must be willing to pay for it or some NGO or government is willing to pay for it.

This huge problem is due to our ignorance and lack of sensitivity towards others. We haven’t understood yet our interdependency.

Use wisdom to see a person clearly before falling in love

Want to share something with you sir. Why do people fall in love with another woman, when they already love someone. Why do men lust after young girl’s. When he loves one, why he hurts her so much.
If this particular man behaves like this, he has no true love for his girlfriend or wife. Some men were reincarnated from the lower animal realm he still has some animalistic instinct to lust for more. Hence it is saver to avoid having such man as lover or husband. This also applies to womenfolk.

It hurts so much.
I know. We must learn to love a person with wisdom.

Yes.
Many fall in love for their good look or wealth. This temptation is too great to avoid. Using wisdom to see a person clearly before falling in love is the main guideline.

Comments :
“Love” is pure….Shouldn’t be confused with something else, I guess. Thank you for your wisdom 🙂

Cos they only love themselves more then others
